Cheap Electric Guitar Pedals For You

Deciding on the right Electric Guitar Pedals For you:

Now when talking about Electric guitar pedals there are hundreds of them on a market, the secret is to decide what you want them to do for you.
Let me use me as an example I use to and still do play in a up beat Rock band, now the sound of that my band was aiming was very simple , vintage Rock sound, there was no need for effects such as flange, chorus, or modulators etc .

So as I had a very simple Marshall amp at the time I bought a Marshall Distortion effects pedal (Marshall JH-1 Jackhammer ) that I could afford, as time went on I bought a better marshal amp the tlc 60 which had Three channels (clean, crunch and lead)so I didn’t need the Distortion pedal, however my playing style was changing and I was getting into new things.

I bought a delay pedal the line 6 DL4 which I totally love, and a really good floor pedal tuner ( BOSS TU2) , and I’m on a search for a a wah pedal , I’m currently looking for a “Bad horsie 2”, its just a matter of time, and I may add a booster pedal but I’m contemplating on that I explain later in Matty fundamental pedal guides where I just explain what pedals I think are essential.

Anyway my point with all this rambling of pedal talk… is that I only got the pedals I needed for the stuff I was doing, plus I personally didn’t want to make things to complex, and I wanted to keep my tone as true as possible.

NOW here are 5 pedals which I think are essential for me anyway , you see remember I play in a rock band / bonjovi/ U2 kind of band; however if you’re in a funk band you might, need other stuff like a compressor etc I explain later:

Tuner:

People often forget about the most important pedal I personally feel a guitarist needs at his disposal which is a solid chromatic tuner, now here a hint , don’t buy cheap and nasty plastic ones that are not chromatic, trust me from experiences, there only on outcome that can come from such foolishness is tears and waste of money they just simple break, and over time dont tune properly, and 2nd always aim for a chromatic tuner, a chromatic tuner are much more precise plus lets you tune to different keys and flats, for example in my band we tune everything a flat down and my Tuner recognises it…

Now the only floor tuner that I will endorse and that I personally feel had stood the test of time is the BOSS TU2 check boss guitar pedals; if you check on the electric guitar pedal review section you can see my full reviews on these babies)

Distortion:

Now if you have your self something like a orange amp or a amp which doesn’t have distortion then it makes sense for you to get one , even though you think you might not use it for your sound let say you play in a jazz band, there will be a time when you mite need the tone of your guitar to just be slightly heavier , plus remember which a good distortion pedal you can control the thickness of the distortion so you can programme a nice light crunch sound just to give you a bit of a boost and obviously if you in a Rock band, well hey programme the pedal to give you that Meaty sound.

Delay pedals: Now for people like me who love playing style like U2 and play alloy of hillsong songs for church etc then this pedal is a must , the best pedal on the market I think so for is the line 6 dl4 there are others that will do the job but this one I find very simple, easy and rocbust to use, my pedal had took quite a beating…

anyway you can see my reviews on these babies in my matty’ pedal reviews.

Boost pedal: Okay I only added this one as it can help you when you playing in places where the sound guy doesn’t know your songs , and you about to pull a lead break or something amazing which needs a boost, now when I was giging loads we had a sound guy that knew my songs inside and out so he knew…However now I’m playing allot in my Church , the songs are different every week and the sound guy are different they don’t really know when i’m about to kick out a solo or something, so this babies are handy …for now to save money I compromise with my 3rd channel on my amp sand make it slightly louder. I heard rumours that Angus young use to play with his volume setting on his guitar like on level 7 and when a lead break came he quickly turn it up to 10 , i tried this every so often but it does get tricky.

Ok there allot more pedals out there , but remember they are called effects pedal which simple mean they add a effect to your sound , meaning they will colour your sound, there nothing wrong with doing it bands like MUSE use a lot of effects , but remember the golden rule is dont buy loads of pedal for the sake of it cos you want to impress or compare with you friends and see who got the biggest, best and most expensive pedals , but just think about what you want to achieve in sound and tone with the pedals. …

Now rage against machine guitar player “Tom Morello uses:

Dunlop Cry Baby, a Digitech Whammy pedal, a Boss DD-2 Digital Delay, a Boss RV-3 Reverb Delay, a DOD EQ pedal (used to boost the volume during guitar solos), an Electro-Harmonix Small Stone Phaser and an Ibanez Flanger.

Now my mate no way as famous as tom but he got twice as many pedals as that, the difference is Tom knows what he needs ..now check below for Tom new set up when he went in to Audio slave.

For his work with Audioslave, Morello added a Boss Tremolo pedal (which can be heard on “Like a Stone”) and replaced the flanger with an MXR Phase 90 (heard on “Getaway Car”). His amplifier of choice has always been a 50-watt Marshall JCM800 in a beat-up Peavey 4×12 cabinet.
